Email links on Vista

Posted November 10th, 2007 at 12:39 PM by danny

My middle brother David is the only one is the family on Vista so far and he has 2 machines on it. He's been having trouble opening links in emails so I decided to do some searching for him and here is what I found:

http://email.about.com/od/outlooktip..._fix_links.htm

The highlights were:

Make Links Work in Windows Mail, Outlook Express, Outlook and Any Other Email Program
Windows Vista

To restore links in email programs using Windows Vista:
  1. Open the Windows menu.
  2. Type "default programs" (not including the quotation marks) under Start Search.
  3. Click Default Programs under Programs.
  4. Now click Set your default programs.
  5. Highlight Internet Explorer under Programs.
  6. Click Set this program as default.
  7. Now click OK.
  8. Close the default programs window.

    Danny -

We are still testing, but the problem may have originated in how the sender (us) created the email. We are using Outlook 2003. The email was created by copying and pasting into a new email. Apparently, when pasting links from one email to another in Outlook 2003, links become "blocked".

Based on my research, the recipient cannot overcome the "block" on the link. Articles suggest that the sender can 1) recreate the link after pasting; or 2) uncheck the "change automatic download settings" on Outlook under Tools>Options>Security.

We will try making those changes today to see if they work.

That's interesting, thanks for the update and look forward to hearing how these test go. Sounds like best bets would be to always create your own links rather than pasting them.
